Alan Katzman's Social Media and College Admissions Course
Alan Katzman is the Founder and CEO of Social Assurity, a company designed to maximize students social media digital footprint. The focus of the company is to make sure that students are benefitting their name through social media, and not hurting their reputation. Their goal is to inform their students and parents of the importance of social media and the impact in can have on someones life. The entrepreneur Katzman is also a former attorney and now occupies his time promoting his companies motto of creating a beneficial digital footprint.
Alan recently approached the Burlington High School Help Desk and asked for us to take a course of his. The purpose of the course was to get our opinions if it truly would help students understand the importance of social media. The course highlighted all the major social media sources that will effect students over time including the most popular adult social media's, and teenagers most popular as well. It surprised me how much snapchat was emphasized. The message was this, no matter what you post, it will never completely go away. You can delete a post but realistically if someone wanted to find it and go into the social media's system, they could find it. The most unacceptable things to post were also shared throughout the course. Things like provocative language, guns, sexual posts, all raise concerns in a college admissions officer/ job interviewers eyes if they see that on your social media page. This leaves them with concerns and they may be less likely to accept you because of this "extended profile" that social media pages have provided. Social Media is legal for interviewers to view because it is a public! So many students have ruined their chances of getting into college because of the things that have been on their social media pages which makes them a less appealing candidate. Social media can also act in a positive way as well though. Students can build their profiles through expressing their interests through social media. Interviewers can find more positive things about you that maybe were left unsaid originally. The effects of social media are endless.
My opinion is this, this course NEEDS to be shared with high schoolers worldwide. Our world is largely effected by social media and by building a great digital profile it...
1. Looks great to Interviewers.
2. Can express more about yourself and the passions that you love.
3. Can't effect you negatively
I think that students should have to take the course freshman year because it would have the biggest impact on them at this time. I know when I was a freshman and people told me things would effect me four years from now it would blow right over my head, but I think this course could definitely catch their attention. I think students could even take it both freshman and sophomore year so that they're reminded twice just how important social media can be towards their future. I thought the course was great for expressing the certain social media's that have the most effect. But also pointing out the social media that some people could underestimate as getting noticed like Snapchat. Overall, the course could be extremely helpful in the future to helping students sustain appropriate and beneficial social media profiles.
